I can now admit I wasn't really looking forward to the games. I live downtown, work in the 'burbs and I just knew my normally peaceful life was going to be turned upside down what with thousands of people every night in my 'hood and a transit system that has a hard enough time keeping up to the demands of Vancouver's day-to-day-life.
I wasn't wrong. There were a couple nights when I had to tightly close my windows to keep out the cacophony from the revelers in the streets. And a couple of commutes were a bit longer and more crowded than usual.
But while I did find myself inconvenienced on a number of occasions, what I did not expect was how much I actually enjoyed having the throngs find out why I love this city so much. Being on Skytrain when it erupted into spontaneous cheers and applause as Canada won yet another gold medal was simply priceless. And walking down Georgia and Robson Streets during the gold medal hockey game was an amazing experience.
As I watched the closing ceremonies on Sunday I felt my heart swell with pride in the amazing feats of our Canadian athletes and in the groundswell of patriotism that so often elludes us Canucks.
So while I conjure the ghosts of Doug and Bob and tell y'all to "take off, eh!", I do hope you'll come back. But in the words of Catherine O'Hara - maybe just not all at once.
So, thanks for visiting and bon voyage!
(Oh yeah, and sorry about all that gold!)
