Characterizing Johnny Weir: Pop Star on Ice as a "queer" film at the 2009 Vancouver International Film Festival is a bit of misnomer for although there is an assumption that Weir is gay, in the end the movie is more about Weir's turn on ice skates in his sequined costumes than actually getting to know what makes him tick. And that is the one big dissappointment in this film.Although it was fun to watch as Weir turns the world figure skating on its head with his flamboyant manner and his equally flamboyant fashion sense (both on and off the ice), I couldn't help but feel we were watching the "short program" where we were only permitted to see the technical side of this larger-than-life character. What was missing was any real attempt to see inside Weir's personal life that might have helped explain where his uniqueness came from and why he so desperately continues to flaunt his figure skating style, regardless of his sexuality.
Weir is apparently shooting a reality show for the U.S. Sundance Channel that will cover his preparations for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. I suspect that like this movie, the television show will appeal to only diehard figure skating fans.
