Why I like the Queer Film Festival more than Pride (or its always better in the dark)

I know I'm probably going to get myself in a lot of trouble here but I actually find myself looking forward to the ten days at the Vancouver Queer Film Festival more than I do Pride each year.

First, I must say this has been a gradual realization as it hasn't always been that way. Up until about three years ago Pride was always the highlight on my gay calendar. Sure, I still love the parade and taking in some of the other Pride events but the more time I have spent at the Queer Film Festival each year the more I look forward to it. Where my partner goes through withdrawal after Pride, I find myself doing the same after the Film Festival.

Here are my five top reasons the Vancouver Queer Film Festival is better than Pride:

5. I don't have to worry about slathering myself in sunscreen to watch a movie like I do at the parade.

4. I can eat popcorn, candy and drink copious amounts of soda without worrying about what someone is going to say (or my waistline).

3. I like the fact the line-ups at the Festival are INSIDE.

2. I can be transported to all parts of the globe, learn all kinds of interesting things about all kinds of different people and be entertained.

But the number one reason I think the Vancouver Queer Film Festival is better than Pride:

1. It has the word "queer" in it. Can someone remind me when exactly the word "gay" disappeared from Vancouver Pride again?
