Sacha Baron Cohen is taking a lot of heat (from both the gay community and beyond) for his latest movie, Bruno, but I can honestly say my partner and I haven't laughed that hard in a very, very long time. There were only about a dozen of us in the theatre (and from the looks few other gays) and it was pretty evident that they didn't find the humour in some of SBC's antics. Sure it made us squirm at times but the absolute insanity of some of the situations that Bruno finds him in are bound to be talked about for a very long time.
Interestingly, according to IMDb, Bruno had the highest opening-weekend gross for a film with an openly gay character in the lead role with $30.6 million. Apparently the previous record was held by The Birdcage in 1996 which opened to $18.3 million.
Our one big disappointment? They went with the simple title Bruno instead of the alternative: Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt.
We actually saw the show in the 'burbs (don't ask!!) and did some shopping afterwards. Eerily, I found myself feeling very vulnerable as a gay man outside my home turf.
This is definitely one to see. And I'm going to go as far to say this will probably even become part of my very, very small DVD collection (but that's for another post).
Go see Bruno! Borat has nothing on him!
